5.0 out of 5 stars different and better, June 11, 2009
By Alexander Scherr – See all my reviews
(Not his real name)
I have both a Kindle and Kindle 2, so I'm committed to the fundamental idea: the e-ink reading in a slim form factor with an excellent connectivity to a wide range books and subscriptions. I have come to rely on my Kindle experience, and has seriously improved my reading.
The DX was not an obvious update for me, but I put two features on the edge: the larger screen, and the native PDF reader. Now I have the DX in my hands, and can report pros and cons, and neutrals:
PROS:
– The big screen is an advantage. I Can Use the larger print size on my Kindle 2 (older eyes), and at this point I can size get more text per page in the DX. This makes the whole reading experience more book-like (and should be a boon for people who buy books large letters.)
– The screen is also sharper and sharper than my Kindle 2 in a side by side comparison: the text is darker and the contrast is much better, so for better visibility in general.
– On a side note, the larger screen also makes it possible to read poetry on the Kindle even at large print sizes. The Kindle before, the smaller screen to cut the line, so you would lose the sense that the poet put an end to the line. In the DX, you can see the whole line exactly as the poet meant, with the cut line in the right place.
– The PDF reader works as advertised, and is very easy. PDF documents appear on the DX just as they do on a computer screen. On the other hand, you can drag and drop documents directly to the device through Usb Cable (or use the email-a fee, if absolutely necessary.) The only drawback: at least for the documents I have used so far, I can not adjust the font size you can with native document Kindle.
– Rotation of the screen also works as advertised: it works as a smooth zoom in both text and graphics and slightly offsets the disadvantage of not being able to adjust the typesize in PDF documents. A nice design touch: the four-way navigation toothpick inserted in the Kindle 2 is sensitive to rotation, and will move as expected in relation to the rotation of the screen.
– More space is dedicated device to the screen, while the white plastic border around the screen seems to have decreased, both generally and on the proportion of the plastic screen in the Kindle 2. I like this (but see below on the keyboard).
– Storage: I like increased storage space, and do not mind the lack of a external storage cards. I can see some people having problems with this, but only those who either a) should take about PDF documents totaling more than 3.5 GB of space or b) must have about 3500 books regularly at hand. I fall into neither category.
CONS:
– On price: is expensive as you can tell fairly quickly. If you value the larger size, and native PDF reader, these features may justify the premium approximately 30% you pay for the DX for the Kindle 2. Indeed, the DX should cost more than the Kindle 2, and a premium of 30% is not unreasonable. But for my money, Amazon should lower price in the Kindle 2 to $ 300 or less, and charge $ 400 or a little less for the DX. However, I bought it and keep it at this price.
– Navigation buttons one-sided: all buttons are on the right side, and none is on the left. I am clever, so it should not complain, but I met with both parties on the Kindle 2. The lefties have reason to complain, I think.
– Handling with one hand: I often read while I walk with my Kindle in hand, and something else in my other. Due to the button layout, this will be more difficult in the DX.
– Metal Music: I miss the support of sticky rubber on my Kindle 1. When I put my Kindle in January on an inclined surface, remained in place. Not so my Kindle 2 and now my DX. This is not a specific complaint to DX, but still there.
Neutral (ie, things should be noted):
– Weight: DX is heavier and noticeably. This is only a matter of if, like me, you use with regularly Kindle with one hand. . . and yet it's still doable.
– Keyboard: The keyboard has four rows, and 5: the top row of numbers Kindle 1 and 2 has been merged into the top row QWERTY, so the numbers are only accessible with ALT-key. The keys are vertically thinner also, that the entire keyboard is only a "high (compared with more than 1.5" in the Kindle 2). At the same time, the keys themselves are slightly easier for the press, a little more prominent than in the Kindle 2. For someone with large fingers (like me), this will be a keyboard a little more difficult to use, but only slightly.
That's all I can see. In general, the advantages outweigh the cons for me, and I am satisfied with my purchase. Now I can think of using DX for my papers on a regular basis due to the PDF reader. The screen size and screen rotation that the overall reading experience more immersive.
In general, the DX feels more like text and less like device and comes closer to the stated objective of the Kindle: for the device to disappear, leaving only the pleasure of reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars DX not quite all that, June 13, 2009
By Susan Lynn Umpleby "Umpleby Susan (Ontario, CA, USA) – See all my reviews
(Not his real name)
I owned the K1 and K2 and then love them both, so I was very excited about the DX. My plan was to use the DX at home and keep my K2 to lead to the creation of all me. It was not long, however, after my DX arrived the day before yesterday, before disappointment set in.
Do not get me wrong, there is a lot to like about the DX:
1) The photos are impressive in it, whether editorial formats properly.
2) Those who complain about the darkness of the text as K2 (a problem I never had, by the way) gets excited about very dark text on DX.
3) The ability to rotate the screen is big. It gives you a closer look at things as maps and graphs.
4) The browser is a little faster than in the K1 or K2, but that's not much to say – is still very awkward to use.
5) However, web pages look bad in the DX.
6) It has 3500 books.
BUT ….. DX it just is not all that. Has drawbacks that make me really consider sending it back before my 30 days to:
1) First and foremost, if it is true that natively read PDF files, in fact it is a PDF viewer * *. You can not change the font size on PDF files, the links do not work in them, and the ability to enlarge pictures on them does not work either. So you better have large fonts in the PDF before loading. Looking at the PDF in landscape mode helps a little, but not by much.
2) The DX is too large to hold comfortably. It's really not so heavy but it is too heavy and feels a tug on his hands. And this attraction is really obvious if you try to use the keyboard while holding it – you have to lay almost the DX level, it becomes so difficult to write.
3) were merged with the arrow keys QWERTY (miss a line of keys). What developments genius thought it would be helpful and an "improvement" of having to press the ALT key each time you wanted to write a number?!?
4) Before my DX came really did not think this would bother me at all, but I have to say, I really hate the fact that the "next page" button on one side only. What more you use the button on the left. And yes, the rotation capacity of the DX can be turned upside down, placing the "site next "button on the left side …. But when you do this, the button is so high you have to move your hand (not the thumb, the whole hand) to turn the page. It may seem nit-demanding, but ultimately it is a PITA to break the reading of it. Not only that, but having the keyboard on top makes it even more is recharged when your back!
5) by turning the DX to be horizontal, the "next page" button in either the bottom or the superior – in any case, you can not turn your thumb and turn the page. Once again, a PITA.
6) Leaving the rotation function in "Auto" when not using your DX drains the battery, so you must remember to activate the feature when you stop reading.
7) Still no folders. A nightmare of the organization three times larger than that of K2 (which in turn has increased the same problem in the K1): the ability to store 3,500 books, but just being able sorting by author, title, and "most recent first."
I will be fiercely debated with myself over the next week or so whether we really want to keep the DX. It is so disappointing. It has the potential to be really great e-reader … but as it stands now, it is not. All right. But for $ 489, should be a lot more than just OK.

Amazon buys verified (What is this?)
Update firmware from 30/11/2009:
Now I have M-Edge Platform Kindle Jacket DX (make and model – gotegran Marina) – Back to School Sale! because you can Set Kindle to pick himself up on the table next to you or a lap desk. This makes it easier to see music, fabric patterns, or simply books (address some users' complaints about being "too heavy" to hold comfortably).
I had been disappointed that the Kindle goes to sleep automatically after five minutes because if you are using the Kindle for reading patterns or music, the wait time you while you is still "working" on a page. However, Amazon come up with a new firmware version … DX Kindle now stays on for 20 minutes before entering the screen saver mode is a great improvement.
And with the new firmware, you have the option to convert your PDF files format Kindle – which should address the lack of "zoom" and "annotation" features – at least for now there is a solution.
UPDATE from of 06/16/2009: The Kindle may have literally saved my career and saved my backend. I had an interview yesterday and thought I knew where I was going. I am a of the last dinosaurs did not have a Garmin and lost. After a while turning around and growing more and more tense about losing my interview, I remembered the browser on the Kindle.
In the K2, the browser is basically unusable due to size. However, with DX, I had the chance to go to Google Maps, seek address and had my address in a couple of seconds. The map is beautifully made and step-by-turn could be marked and even if my DX fell asleep woke up still shows the instructions. Kindle THANKS!
