My favorite Chicago Cubs players
The Chicago Cubs favorite players
The following are a number of players I have ridden Chicago Cubs representing players who have established and have continued over the years. There is no particular order and there may be someone left out and some who may wonder why someone on the list. That's good, is my list. Any Cub fan can make a list.
There are 33 players on the list but no special reason for that number. The length of time the player was with the Cubs had an influence but not make it a rule that sense. Just the time he was referring only had more time to watch them play.
Do not reach for the positions. I was not trying to make a team All-Star.
Some may wonder why Bob Buhl is on the list. Probably does not accord well with some of the other pitchers on the list but there is something special to me about it. Any player who takes the time to come to my first little league game of the season and talk to children 9-12 years old like me at the time of going to make my favorites list.
Most of the players on the list for obvious reasons. Some are just personal choices because I liked to see them play and somewhere in the way they did something special.
I saw Don Caldwell pitch a no-hitter on WGN, with Milt Pappas and Ken Holtzman. Jim Hickman hit a memorable game breaking homers. Dave Kingman hit some monsters. Some were part of teams that went to the playoffs. The 1969 team was A special team despite that crashed and burned.
I have included Sammy Sosa, but changed his mind. Put some big numbers and was a fan favorite for many years. But the way he ended his career by leaving the game early in the past and the cloud hanging over his head on with the use of steroids and we will not forget the corked bat had an effect simmering in his time with the Cubs. You do not see your number is retired and says that his choice Hall of Fame will be in doubt.
